  • Understanding and Treating Obesity

Obesity is not an easy condition to treat, or understand. In my experience, obese individuals are not weaker or less capable than people of normal weight. On the contrary, they are frequently more capable - it's just that their workload or "life-load" is heavier. Very often they spend too much time helping others and not enough on themselves. My program aims to improve this imbalance by giving them extra time and encouragement. So far, this approach has had excellent results, with many severely overweight members losing 60, 80 or even 100 pounds of weight.

The Importance of Weight Loss Support

Trying to lose weight on your own is difficult at the best of times, but when you are obese or seriously overweight it's almost impossible. This is why the foundation of my weight management program is my Community Forum, which offers 365-day help and encouragement to all members.

I personally manage the forum, with the support of a fantastic group of dedicated moderators and thousands of friendly members. It's a truly wonderful community with nearly 100,000 posts and thousands of threads on every conceivable topic and problem associated with diet-motivation, weight reduction, healthy eating, exercise, cooking and food recipes.

This type of personal support makes it much easier to maintain healthy eating and exercise habits, which is why weight loss results among obese members are so spectacular. We have members regularly achieving weight losses of 60-pounds, 80-pounds, even 100-pounds. They also achieve much improved cholesterol and other blood work.

To put it simply, my weight management program is MUCH MORE than a series of healthy eating and exercise instructions - it's a COMMUNITY packed with friendly supportive members who cheer each other's successes and help each other through the difficult times. For anyone with mild obesity (BMI >30) or severe obesity (BMI > 35), the program offers a real opportunity to normalize weight and improve health.

    New Members Forum

This forum is specifically for newcomers. When members first join the weight loss program, they drop in here to introduce themselves. This gives other members an opportunity to welcome them and offer instant encouragement.

    Weekly Weigh-In Forum

Each week, members weigh-in and report how they are doing. It's a great way to stay focused on your diet. Anne Collins offers personal advice and tips to every member who weighs in.

    Personal Logs Forum

This is where members start their own log and keep a journal of their food, exercise, and personal weight loss goals. Other members 'visit' to chat, encourage, offer advice and make some new friends. Some members prefer to keep a private and confidential online journal - only accessible by themselves - to record their daily food intake, exercise routines and general weight loss progress.

    Diet Issues Discussion Forum

On this forum we help members to develop a WINNING ATTITUDE by discussing ALL diet issues, especially "how to overcome daily problems." Popular threads include:

    Confession Corner
If you have a bad day or a 'splurge', instead of worrying about it and feeling guilty, simply drop in to our Confession Corner, and tell us about it. Other members will rush to your support and haul you right back on the wagon.

    Small Successes
Small victories are very important - they add up to the BIG success. We have a special place for you to tell us about that pie you passed up on, that candy you refused, that temptation you resisted. Tell us about it, because as a group we are proud of each others successes.

    One Perfect Day
Very often, a good dieting-day is all it takes to get you started or to get you back on track if you are having difficulty staying on your diet. We have a Perfect Day thread in which members commit to achieving Just One Perfect Day on their plan.

    No-Cheat Weekend
A cheat-free weekend is something that ALL of us have difficulty with. That is why one of our members started the No-cheat-Weekend thread so others can check in on Friday and commit to a cheat-free weekend. It may not always work but it certainly helps to limit the damage!!

Top 5 Reasons for Losing Weight
Having the right Incentive is absolutely critical for successful weight loss. You must have a very clear reason WHY you want to lose weight and that is why we encourage all our members to think about WHY they are dieting and ask them to post their Top 5 Reasons. Reading through this thread is a wonderful way of staying motivated.

    Late Night Eating
Snacking at night is a problem for many people. We have a great thread on this topic which includes tons of tips and advice on how to quit this habit or to incorporate healthy late-night snacks into your diet so you don't stop losing weight.

    199 Club (aka "ONEderland")
If you weigh in excess of 200 pounds then SMASHING THE 200 POUND BARRIER is a powerful goal. That is why we started our 199 Club thread. You can talk to others who have smashed the 200 pound barrier and enjoy their help and support in doing the same!

    1/2 Pound A Week Club
Many people, for various reasons, lose weight more slowly than others. This may be because of a medical condition, or because you are on meds that affect the rate you lose weight, or it may be because you have only a few pounds to lose. Whatever the reason, watching others lose weight faster can be frustrating. Because of this, we set up the 1/2 Pound A Week Club where people who lose more slowly support each other and make everything a whole lot easier.

    Seniors
Special thread where our senior members share tips, advice, support, chat about life in general, the kids, the grandkids, share funny stories.

    Brides-to-Be
Special thread for our Brides-to-Be to talk to each other and get help and support. Many are at different stages of their weight loss journey, some just starting out, some close to their wedding goal. A place to share your excitement, news of your dress shopping, wedding and honeymoon plans and, of course, to calm some of those "wedding nerves".

    Fibromyalgia/PCOS/Hypothyroidism/Menopause
Members who have a condition that makes it more difficult to reduce weight find it really helpful to talk to others who have similiar difficulties. As well as sharing their weight loss progress, members also discuss what treatments they have tried, what has worked (and not worked).

    Shift Workers
Working shift makes it more difficult to stick to a regular eating plan. Many of our members work 12-hour shifts and use this thread to talk to others for advice and tips - about food, meal-planning and tons of other issues.

What Doctors Say About The Program

    Doctor Tina Ambury

"Anne Collins Weight Loss Program is one of the best value programs on the Internet. It offers a wide range of healthy food, uses simple, healthy recipes and wonderful support to keep you motivated. Unlike some diets this program encourages then supports real lifestyle changes that are sustainable. This is not a yo-yo diet. It's a way of life. I have personally lost weight on the program, and as a doctor, I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who wants to improve their weight and health."
    Dr. Tina Ambury FRCGP, GP.

"I am a Psychiatrist... your diet has the most reasonable information on weight loss, healthy eating habits, and exercise that I have found on the internet... it teaches exactly what I want my patients to learn."
    Dr JD.(Florida)

"Your weight loss program really works and I will recommend any prospective dieters (including my patients) to visit your site and join the program."
    Dr DS.(London)

I found Anne Collins through my doctor! We had a long discussion one day about my weight and how many diets I had tried etc. He told me to go on-line and find Anne"s site. He was doing research at the time on on-line diets (e-diets etc) and said that Anne's was the only one that was always nutritionally sound and would make sure the weight would come off and stay off! The best advice I was ever given!!

Program Improves Blood Work and Lab Results

Many members report a rapid improvement in blood sugar and cholesterol levels when following the program. Here is a small sample of the type of improvements reported.

Anne, ... my doctor told me yesterday that he didn`t think I needed my zestril [high blood pressure med] He has lowered my thyroid med to about half of what it was. And I`ve been off prednisone now since Aug. ALL THANKS TO YOU. Thanks so much Anne for all you`ve done..
    (Post on AC Forum)

Anne... My doctor called me personally at work to tell me that I won't have to take cholesterol meds. My LDL was 164. It is now 104! I really feel like my body is ready to let go of the fat and maybe it won't be so hard from now on. Thanks Anne for not letting me give up!
    (PM to Anne Collins)

I have lost 60 pounds as of today. I`m on thyroid medicine, I was on prednisone which made me gain weight, but on this diet [cholesterol lowering diet] I started losing even though I was on both medications. I`m on the GI diet now. I love the food on it.
    (Post on AC Forum)

I'm on the GI plan... down another three pounds this week for a grand total of 42 pounds... and the doc took me off my meds! I owe it all to you guys, the support here is awesome.
    (Post on AC Forum)

Hello Anne, I want to tell you about how am I doing with my "Low-Glycemic Diet", so far I have lost 23 pounds and I'm on my 5th week. My sugar levels are very good I even had to lower the dosage on my insulin.
    (PM to Anne Collins)

    Anne
I had a cholesterol screening yesterday at Fred Meyer pharmacy. Blood is from a finger poke vs. a blood draw but the technician said accuracy is within a few points. Since starting the cholesterol lowering diet 11 weeks ago: total cholesterol, down 39 points to 197; triglicerides, down 28; HDL about the same; LDL, down 29 points with a total cholesterol/HDL ratio of 3.8 instead of 4.14. I'm delighted with my progress...
    (PM to Anne Collins)

    Dear Anne
I've been meaning to send you a progress report but I only found time this morning! My doctor is extremely pleased with my progress so far. My LDL is down from 155 to 121; triglycerides down to 119 from 180 and total down from 250 to 195. As far as my weight goes, I'm down 27 pounds and I must admit I do feel very much better. Yesterday I walked 3 miles and still I felt as though I could go on and on! I told my doctor all about your program and showed her what I was eating, and she was extremely impressed... So all in all, I'm very satisfied with how I'm doing. Best wishes.
    (PM to Anne Collins)

"I started on the cholesterol diet in Nov 2004. I got a letter from my doctor with my physical results and my cholesterol has changed dramatically since last January.
    Overall: 188 (was over 260)
HDL: 36 (still needs some work)
    LDL: 127 (was over 150)
    Triglycerides: 124!! (was over 300!)
That is amazing considering my family history of terrible cholesterol."
    (Post on AC Forum)

I started this diet four months ago motivated to lower a 261 cholestrol level. The plan at that time was to be good for three months and see where it got me. Its been four months of healthier eating, and some of it is starting to become habit. This time I think the pounds are gone for good! This make 30 pounds in less than 4 months. But hear this... my Cholesterol Count over the past few months has dropped from 261 to 204. I am so thrilled...
    (PM to Anne Collins)

I had my three month blood test at the lab last week. I went to my doctors yesterday. My number was down to 5.7 and I don't have to take meds. My doctor was so happy and proud of me and I have Anne to thank for that. I am just going to stay where I am for now and I am going to talk to Anne about any changes. I really credit her for my success. So I will see everyone at weigh in next Monday. Have a good week...
